Energy-Dependent Gamma-Ray Burst Peak Durations and Blast-Wave Deceleration

چکیده
Temporal analyses of the prompt gamma-ray and X-ray light curves of gamma-ray bursts reveal a tendency for the burst pulse time scales to increase with decreasing energy. For an ensemble of BATSE bursts, Fenimore et al. (1995) show that the energy dependence of burst peak durations can be represented by ∆t ∝ E−γ with γ ≃ 0.4– 0.45. This power-law dependence has led to the suggestion that this effect is due to radiative processes, most notably synchrotron cooling of the non-thermal particles which produce the radiation. Here we show that a similar power-law dependence occurs, under certain assumptions, in the context of the blast-wave model and is a consequence of the deceleration of the blast-wave. This effect will obtain whether or not synchrotron cooling is important, but different degrees of cooling will cause variations in the energy dependence of the peak durations. Time-integrated Gamma-ray Burst Synchrotron Spectra from Blast Wave/cloud Interactions
We show that the spectral shape of the low energy tails found for the time-integrated spectra of gamma-ray bursts, even in the absence of strong synchrotron cooling, can be significantly softer than the νFν ∝ ν4/3 asymptote predicted by synchrotron shock models. As we have noted in a previous work, blast wave deceleration via interaction with ambient material causes the characteristic electron ...

We investigate the dynamics and radiation from a relativistic blast-wave which decelerates as it sweeps up ambient matter. The bulk kinetic energy of the blast-wave shell is converted into internal energy by the process of accreting external matter. If it takes the form of non-thermal electrons and magnetic fields, then this internal energy will be emitted as synchrotron and synchrotron self-Co...

The time and angle dependent line and continuum emission from a dense torus around a cosmological gamma-ray burst source is simulated, taking into account photoionization, collisional ionization, recombination, and electron heating and cooling due to various processes. The importance of the hydrodynamical interaction between the torus and the expanding blast wave is stressed. Due to the rapid d...

In the external shock model, gamma-ray burst (GRB) emissions are produced by the energization and deceleration of a thin relativistic blast wave due to its interactions with the circumburst medium (CBM). We study the physical properties of an analytic function which describes temporally-evolving GRB spectra in the limit of a smooth CBM with density n(x) ∝ x−η, where x is the radial coordinate. ...

We use a new method of analysis to determine parameters of cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), assuming that their distribution follows the star formation history of the universe. Spectral evolution is calculated from an external shock model for Ðreball/blast-wave evolution and used to evaluate the measured peak Ñux, duration, and peak photon energy for a GRB source occurring at a given redsh...
